When machine learning and Islamic calligraphy come together, a new space opens, latent to both sides. Potentials are unleashed and new possibilities are created. “Navigating the Latent” is an investigation into the unseen capacities of Islamic calligraphy with the use of deep neural networks that can dramatically expand the creative and practical space of this artform. This project introduces calligraphy pieces with a new mode of expression that reveals the latent space of possibilities between discrete data samples and demonstrates the potentials of the unexplored intersection of machine learning and Islamic calligraphy.
