Lily

Lily is a photogrammetry model and 3D resin print of a blanket my late grandmother knitted for me before I was born. The project is named after the blanket itself, which I named Lily when I was young. I wanted to work with it as it's an object that I associate heavily with my childhood and comfort. The process of photogrammetry captures the areas of the blanket that have already been worn down, but the 3D model will not change even if the physical object deteriorates. The blanket is captured in its current state within a digital file, and I can carry it with me along with the feelings associated. Working on this project has allowed me to reflect on the history of the object and the process of creating a gift for someone you haven’t met. My grandma’s choice to include not only the pastel blues and pinks traditionally considered masculine and feminine respectively, but additionally yellow feels like an early prediction of my non-binary identity. I hope that recontextualizing the blanket by viewing it in this way elevates the craftsmanship necessary to create the blanket and reminds the viewer of things that were a source of comfort in their childhood.
