‘Étendue’ is a series of smell-recordings undertaken in Marseille, France in January 2020. The project proposes a reflexive approach towards scent creation that takes into account the time-dimension of smell and the subjectivities of the artist-researcher. It is possible to analyze, translate, and interpret an odor, but is it possible to communicate the act of smelling? The 5 unique scent-compositions created for the project address this question with the aim of extending the practice of field recording from the ear to the nose.
